The State of Amazonia (1,577,820.2 km²
total area) is home to the largest tropical rainforest in the world. Its
water basin (6,217,220 Km²) has more that 20,000 km of navigable waterways.
Its principal rivers are: the Amazon, the Negro, the Solimões, the
Purus, the Juruá and the Madeira.
The Population of the state of Amazonia,
famously generous and hospitable, is estimated at 2,389,000, of which 48%
life in Manaus. Inhabitants of Manaus are known as Manauara or Manauense.
The state has an estimated population density of 1.51 per km/sq.
Today in Amazonia there are two important areas of economic growth: the
Duty Free Zone created in 1967 and Eco-Tourism, which is a massively expanding
market. There are also areas where mining, agriculture, ranching
and forestry from sustainable sources are developing.

Amazonia is located in the centre of Brazil’s
Northern Region, bordered to the North by the State of Roraima, Venezuela
and Colombia; to the East by the State of Pará; to the Southeast
by the State of Mato Grosso; to the South by the State of Rondonia and
to the Southwest by the State of Acre and by Peru.
The Climate is topical: hot and humid with
an average temperature of 31.4°. The Rain season runs from December
to March. The Rio Negro reaches its maximum flood level in June, while
its strongest ebb tide occurs in September. The average monthly rainfall
for Manaus is 210mm.
Its Relief is characterised by dry land
which is very flat and low level. The higher ground, largely made
up of the Itapirapecó, Imeri, Urucuzeiro and Cupim ranges, is on
the border with the State of Roraima and with Venezuela. This is where
Pico da Neblina (3.014 m), Brazil’s highest point, is located.
The Amazonian Plain comprises:
* Meadows and streams (The Flood Plain)
* Dry Land
The Flora is dense and massively varied,
of extraordinary biodiversity, hiding species that science has yet to discover,
and covers 90% of the state. It comprises the following types of forests:
* The Perenifolia Paludosa Ribeirinha
Forest – Low plain forest (flooded during specific seasonal periods).
* The Perenifolia Hileiana Amazônica
Forest – Dry land forest.
* Igapó Forest – permanently flooded.
Its Capital - Manaus, was one of the first
in Brazil to benefit from electricity. This was thanks to the vast
fortunes made in its heyday as one of the world’s “rubber” capitals. Aside
from modern marvels such as electricity, the “Rubber Barons” spent vast
fortunes on exuberant architectural creations such as the Manaus Opera
House (Teatro Amazonas) and the Floating Port.
Manaus, named after the Manaos Indians
who inhabited the region, stands on the left bank of the Rio Negro, close
to where it joins the waters of the Rio Solimões. The different
characteristics of the two rivers (temperature, density and speed), create
a magnificent spectacle where the waters, one black, one brown, unable
to mix, run side by side for several kilometres, until they finally blend
to form the River Amazon.
The Time Difference is -1 in relation to
Brasilia time (when the clocks change for summer time, this becomes -2
since the state has no official summer time.) Bank opening times are from
09:00 to 15:00 local time.
